Current Project
We are excited to announce our latest project, generously funded by the Oil Spill Recovery Institute (OSRI), focusing on Potential Places of Refuge (PPOR) for ships in distress in Western and Arctic Alaska.
The primary objective of this study is to identify and assess safe anchorages that can be utilized by ships during emergencies, including natural disasters, oil spills, and other environmental hazards. We specifically concentrate on PPOR suitable for deep draft vessels, such as oil tankers and cruise ships, with drafts of 20’ or more. This crucial research plays a significant role in bolstering the state's emergency preparedness plan, enhancing maritime safety, and safeguarding Alaska's precious coastal environment. We are committed to collaborating with local communities and industry stakeholders to ensure the comprehensive assessment of these PPOR sites and provide valuable insights for effective emergency response strategies.
